The Constitution is only as effective as those who abide by it

Dear The Liberty,

Despite what some Americans may think, the Constitution is no magical incantation against government wrongdoing. Indeed, it’s only as effective as those who abide by it. However, without courts willing to uphold the Constitution’s provisions when government officials disregard it and without a citizenry knowledgeable enough to be outraged when those provisions are undermined, it provides little to no protection against SWAT team raids, domestic surveillance, police shootings of unarmed citizens, indefinite detentions, and the like.
Indeed, the building blocks for a police state are already in place.

There are the surveillance networks, fusion centers and government contractors which already monitor what is being said by whom; government databases already tracking who poses a potential threat to the government’s power; the militarized police, working in conjunction with federal agencies, already coordinating with the federal government when it’s time to round up the troublemakers; the courts already sanctioning the government’s methods, no matter how unlawful; and the detention facilities, whether private prisons or FEMA internment camps, which have already been built and are waiting to lock up the troublemakers.

These are uncertain times on many fronts, but if there’s one thing you can be sure of it is that The Rutherford Institute will keep fighting the good fight in the name of freedom. We’re taking a stand in and out of the courts in defense of individuals who are being penalized, discriminated against and labeled criminals for merely exercising their constitutional rights.

Even so, it’s not an easy undertaking, and we can’t do it alone. That’s why, for the sake of those whose freedoms depend on your support, I hope you will please make a tax-deductible donation to The Rutherford Institute today. You can do so by clicking the Donate link below, online at www.rutherford.org, or by calling our Donor Hotline at 1-800-225-1791.

Recognizing how critical this battle really is, how much depends on our ability to prevail in the battles to come, and how lean our bank balance is right now, some donors have issued a matching gift challenge of $100,000. If we can raise the matching funds by May 31, we’ll be in much better shape to take on battles that await us before the U.S. Supreme Court and in the lower courts. Please don’t delay. Every day and every dollar make a difference in this fight for our freedoms.

Yours faithfully,

John W. Whitehead

President
